Do you believe that you can see God? Can a person experience God? If we cannot see God, how did Moses see the burning bush? Divinity was hidden in that bush. That Energy gave certain commands of righteousness to Moses, because goodness comes only through spiritual evolution. Gold does not give out goodness; dollars cannot buy goodness. Goodness comes only from divinity-from that all positive qualities emerge and manifest so that God can be experienced. Many people have the notion that we cannot experience God while we are alive. But Jacob said, "I have seen God and my life is preserved.
Tell me one thing: Can Truth have interpretation? After being interpreted, can Truth remain Truth? I'm talking about the Ultimate Reality. Interpretation is only an approach to Truth. Scientific theories are not in themselves Reality; they only provide the closest and best possible explanation of natural phenomena.
Anything which changes revolves around something which remains stationary, like the wheel of a car spins around something that is unchangeable. Life changes. I was young. I grew up, I'll become old and then I'll die. This life, this body, is connected to something which is unchangeable. This unchangeable entity is called 'Atman' or 'Soul'. If you concentrate on a changeable thing, your vision, your attention, will be changing all the time. It's like a movie: every frame changes, every frame is different, and all are projected on a screen. If it is a comedy, we laugh, if it is something sad, we cry. Different emotions come and go. However, if you turn and look towards the source, you see nothing but light. All the dualities of happiness/sadness, joy/grief, etc. vanish because now you are experiencing the source, you are not experiencing the reflection anymore. So in order to rise above the dualities of Nature, such as success and failure, joy and grief, and even life and death, we should look towards the Source.
This booklet is based on the discourses of Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj on the subject of science and spirituality. It hopes to prove that the two are not mutually exclusive, but rather complement and reinforce each other. Spirituality, the original and universal religion, is ancient. All the great scriptures of the world are nothing but the textbooks of spiritual science: describing it, discussing it and urging each and every person to experience it for him or herself. Empirical or physical science is a comparatively recent phenomenon, but it has completely transformed the thinking and way of life of mankind, doing away with the superstitions and orthodoxy which had trammelled the human intellect for so long, freeing it to work miracles and making man the master of his environment.
At first, science posed an apparent threat to religion. Indeed, it exposed the fallacies and inconsistencies of organized religion, but it could not invalidate the eternal truths which are the core of true spirituality. As science has unravelled more and more natural mysteries, it has proved itself to be the external equivalent of the inner probing of the spiritual scientist. The laboratory and observatory of the scientist yield up the secrets of the universe, while the inner laboratory of the soul reveals its mysteries to the saint. The body is a microcosm of the universe. The findings of scientific research have scriptural parallels and vice-versa. Development in both fields-science an spirituality-are vital for a healthy, happy and balanced society.
Unfortunately, scientific progress has not been matched by an equivalent progresss spiritually. As man's vision has become increasingly externallyoriented, he has lost sight of the inner universe. Therefore, a succession of high-souled Masters has come into this world to remind us that we must evolve in all aspects of our being, and that without a strong spiritual base, society cannot be balanced and harmonious. One such great Master is Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj, who was born in the holy town of Hardwar into the family of the great Yogi, Shri Hans Ji Maharaj. Under the guidance of his father, who was also his Guru, Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj's natural inclination towards contemplation and introspection was encouraged and developed. From the age of two and a half he was often absorbed in deep meditation. He very soon attained the heights of spiritual perfection, and his life is a living example of meditation in action. From his very childhood he cherished the ambition to spread spiritual awareness on such a scale that it would provide an antidote to the nuclear fever engulfing the world.
