In response to the invitation of the Bangalore University to inaugurate its seventeen-lecture- series programme on Science, Society, and the Scientific Attitude, Swami Ranganathananda addressed a meeting on 'Science and Religion' at the Senate Hall of the University on 5 August 1976. The University later published that lecture as a book, for presentation to the graduates of the University at its annual Convocation.
In view of the topical importance of the subject, and with a view to reaching a wider reading public in India and abroad, we are happy to bring out this edition of the lecture in book form, after suitable revision by the Swami. Another lecture on 'Faith and Reason', delivered by the Swami at the Ramakrishna Ashrama, Gwalior, on 26 May 1976, and revised by him, has also been included in this book, being closely relevant to the main theme.
