The work is valuable and very important not only for pharmaceutical science but practitioners of Ayurveda as well. It's two commentaries Dipika by Adhamalla and Gudhartha Dipika by Kasirama being in Sanskrit are rarely accessed by the scholars and authors. 'Sarayu' is the first English commentary on Sarigadhara Samhita including Adhamalla's Dipika and Kasirama's Gudhartha Dipika. This commentary throws open the treasure of knowledge hidden between the lines of Sarngadhara Samhita. The author has also included relevant knowledge from the classical works of Caraka, Susruta, Vagbhata and other classics. Thus the readers may not be required to look else- where for the subject being accessed by him. This work will fulfil the needs of under and post graduate students, teachers, research scholars, Ayurveda practitioners, and Ayurvedic pharma industry. The first volume is being published and the other two volumes are coming shortly.
I thank my friend Dr. Shriram Savrikar for inviting me to write a foreword for the English translation of Sarngadhara Samhita with its commentary titled 'Sarayu'. The task proved personally beneficial to me. If I would have declined this invitation, I would never have probably got a chance to know the knowledge hidden within the interiors of Sarngadhara Samhita. Till I took over this task, I used Sarngadhara Samhita only as a reference book for technical terminologies and drug formulations. I realized the uniqueness of the expertise of Sarngadhara in drug preparation while reading the classic thoroughly for writing this fore- word. The respect for Sarngadhara in my mind enhanced in multitudes after observing the intelligence and skill of in depth analysis of Sarngadhara observed every now and then in the text. Similarly Adhamalla and Kasirama both the commentators of Sarngadhara Samhita, impressed me by their in depth know- ledge of Ayurvedic classics and their capacity of explaining the subject in detail. Dr. Savrikar has easily and successfully lifted the weight of this mammoth task by translating this beautiful classic in simple English with critical commentary.
While reading Sarngadhara Samhita, it is felt that while writing this book, Sarngadhara has described all the subjects in brief by giving appropriate justice to the basic principles of Ayurvedic medicine.
