Eleven works of literature have been honoured till date with Saraswati Samman, established by the K.K. Birla Foundation in 1991. The creators of these works are prestigious writers of Contemporary Indian Literature. They do not need any introduction. But we are assailed with questions about this award and these writers time and again. This book is being published to explain and share these details.
This book was planned sometime ago. As a result the book is limited to ten writers and ten awards only. Besides the detailed description of Saraswati Samman and tracing the movement in Indian Literature, in the backdrop of which awarded works are selected year after year, this book includes two essays by renowned scholars on each of the awarded works. It also contains the literary and creative exposition of the awarded writers, as well as the talks and speeches given on the occasion of the function of Saraswati Samman.
The guidance of Dr. K.K. Birla and Smt. Shobhana Bhartia in bringing out the book has been inspirational. Many friends have contributed whole heartedly to enable the collection of the contents. They have been acknowledged in the book. It would have been difficult to publish this book without their help and support. I express a deep gratitude towards all of them on behalf of the Foundation and especially from me. Smt. Smita Bharti gave valuable help in editing the material assembled earlier at the time of the award functions. Amongst the colleagues at the Foundation, I am grateful to Shri K.
