It has been the dream of the academic world of the Universities teaching Sanskrit to see the plays of Shakespeare worded in the language of Bhasa, Bhavabhati and Kalidasa. This long-cherished dream of students and scholars alike is coming true. Prof. S. D. Joshi and Pt. Vighnahari Deo have placed in their hands Shakespeare's Hamlet in chaste and simple Sanskrit.
In recent times Hamlet has become one of the most popular plays of Shakespeare. It is certainly one of the most difficult, and Shakespeare is at his best in his Hamlet. Hence, the reader must appreciate the arduous nature of the task of rendering this play into Sanskrit, a task in which the authors have succeeded to a remarkable degree. They have produced a highly readable rendering.
Any modern translation of a classical work is, to some extent, interpretative, Besides, it is bound to be, an adaptation if the attempt is to translate it into the ancient and hallowed cultural imagery and idiom of a language like Sanskrit, The authors have not merely translated Hamlet, but have interpreted and adapted it anew. It is presented in the proper form fitting Sanskrit dramaturgy and literature. Still, Candrasenah is as close and faithful to Hamlet as has been possible to make him.
A Sanskrit drama without songs is unthinkable, Ophelia's songs have been rendered here in fresh compositions as well as in borrowings from well-known classics to convey the idea and create an authentic atmosphere.
The authors must be congratulated for these achievements, knowing as we do, how difficult a play in the original is. I hope they will continue their literary activity and blaze the path for others to follow, so that Sanskrit may be blessed with more and more popular works and new writers.
