The Ayurveda is considered as the ancient and classical text on medicinal application in India since time immemorial. The essence of it is the indigenous method of healing against the malfunctioning of three basic physiological elements in human body that is pitta, vayu and kapha. The roots of this knowledge can be traced through the study of some important manuscripts. The Asiatic Society is a great repository of such source materials spread out in specific valuable manuscripts. Sannipatacandrika is one such manuscript which has been thoroughly studied in its entirety initially by late Professor Brahmananda Gupta and later on joined by Professor Abichal Chattopadhyay after the sad demise of the former. The publication is now ready for wider readership in this special field of enquiry into the knowledge of ancient treaties related to the origin of the problems of health as well as its curative measures. I hope the younger researchers will derive much benefit out of it for their future studies.
The Ayurveda
The journey of the Ayurveda started from time immemorial since human instinctively learned to avoid the pain. From then Ayurveda has attained the age of maturity emerging from its Vedic medley of charms and simple drugs, from the incantation of magic rituals, into the maturity of rationally expounded science of health and disease and a systematic practice of remedies. The continuity of tradition which Ayurveda enjoyed is the continuity of growth, not mere survival. This lasted from the time of Atreya up to the end of seventeenth century after Christ. It was therefore a process of scientific development and not as a mere mechanical process operating on the basis of collective drill and training. The value of knowledge and consequently of education was fully realised by the early ancestors of our race. Knowledge was indeed so highly prized by the scholars that they dedicated their whole lives to the pursuit of learning, living away from the distraction of the world.
Tradition of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is an eternal flow of knowledge which transcends from the time of evolution of human for the benefit of humanity. Initially the motive was to get rid of pain but gradually need of documentation in a systematic manner was felt and in order to propagate the system in the form of primary healthcare module in a rational way for all intellectual group of scholars, the wisdom evolved as santhitä.
