It gives me immense pleasure to present before the world of scholars the second edition of Sangita Makaranda of Narada. It is edited by Mangesh Ramakrishna Telanga, a scholar of merit. The first edition of this work was prepared long back in 1920 and was published by the Central Library of Baroda. It is a seminal work on music. As the title of this work suggests, it contains the nectar of music. This work though small in size, will be useful to the lovers of music and allied Arts as its content, style and qualitative presentation techniques make the work outstanding. The preset work is a notable contribution of the author known for his academic caliber and competence. For the reprinting of this book a fresh composition was done and proofs were read repeatedly, with utmost care. I am thankful to Dr. Sharmila Bagchi, Mr. Nandkishor Mishra and Dr. Vipul Patel, Temp. Research Officers, Oriental Institute for their whole hearted efforts in bringing out this work. Thanks are due to the University Authorities of The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara for permitting and releasing grants for reprinting of this work. We are grateful to Shri Jatin H. Somani, Manager, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda Press and his staff for neat printing and publication. We hope that the present work will be well received by the scholars and the need of its availability will be fulfilled.
The present book entitled Sangita Makaranda by Narada is one of the very few Sanskrit works on Music that have been hitherto printed and published. Materials for the history of ancient Indian Music - If the reader will just have a glance at the list, which is by no means complete of Sanskrit works specially appended to this edition for the information of the researchers in the Department of Music, he will have an idea of the extent of the literature on the subject. The list does not include the names of a number of works written by many ancient masters of Music such as Veņa, Matanga, Kohala, Tumburu, Yastika, Visvavasu, Hanuman alias Anjaneya, Dantila, Kambala, Aśvatara, Rudrata, Kasyapa, Umapati¹, Gopala Nayaka etc. from whose works quotations have been made by Chatura Kallinatha (about A.D. 1400-1500) in his commentary on Sangita Ratnakara. Unfortunately Kallinatha mentions only the names of the authors and not the names of their works. Hence the names of the works of these authors could not be included in the list. In the above commentary Chatura Kallinatha has quoted one whole chapter from a work called 'Sangita Meru' by Kohala2. In this chapter Kohala mentions the names of the following writers on Music probably dancing. Bhatta Tandu, Sambhu, Sumantu, Purari, Ksemaraja and Lohita Bhatta. He also mentions the name of a work entitled Desi Nrtta Samudra by Narada. Sarngadeva mentions a work called Brhaddesi by Yastika³. Besides these, names of numerous other authors have been mentioned by Sarngadeva in his Sangita Ratnakara without specifying their works. As research work is being carried on by various Scholars and Institutions, it is likely that many of these works may come to light hereafter.
