Book Description
About the Book

SAMI expounds the philosophy of the Vedas in his poetry. He himself says: "I express in Sindhi what is enshrined in the Vedas". Shah Latif is the Premier Poet of Sind. Sachal Sarmast is ranked next to him. Both were Sufi mystics and devotees of Love and Beauty. Of these they have sung with ecstatic fervour. Sami, however, is a Vedantic Seer. As such, he interprets divine truths in a placed and serene manner and hardly resorts to any comantic effusions.

About the Author

Prof. K. B. Advani's respective monographs on Shah Latif and Sachal Sarmast have already appeared in MIL series. Thus he has covered all the three great poets of Sind.

Fundamentally, there is no difference between Sufism and Vedantism. The underlying philosophy in both is the same: The world is an illusion and God is the Great Illusion Maker. Sami calls it 'Maya' and Sufi mystics call it 'Talisman' or 'Magic'. Everything else is ephemeral and elusive. Life is but a dream and our existence is but a shadow or a bubble.

On this theme Prof. Advani has dwelt fairly elaborately and also on other aspects of Sami's poetry. Lovers of spiritual philosophy, it is hoped, will find this monograph interesting and illuminating.

Preface

Shah, Sachal and Sami are the three leading poets of Sind. The first two are mystics or Suti poets, Sami is called "The Vedantic Poet of Sind'.

Sami's poetry, according to his own claim is 'the voice of the Vedas in Sindhi'. Veda' means true or divine knowledge, its function being to destroy our 'Avidya' or Ignorance. This world is a grand illusion and God is the Illusion Maker. We, through our ignorance, treat the world as reality, though it is but a phantom- show and has no real existence. This is the gist of Sami's philosophy. Says the poet, 'All saints but expound the same truth'. Keeping this in view, I have endeavoured to interpret his philosophy against the background of Eastern as well as Western Mysticism.

My monographs on Shah and Sachal-Shah Latif and Sachal Sarmast' have already appeared in MIL series. I owe an immense debt of gratitude to the Sahitya Akademi for entrusting to me the sacred task of writing this monograph on Sami also.

I wish to record here my appreciation for my daughter-in-law Komal Ashok Advani's diligence in reading through the manuscripts and preparing the typescrips without her help, this monograph would perhaps have never seen the light of day.
