From pretty early time Mithila reached the zenith of fame for its unique contribution to the schools of Navyanyāya and Navyasmști. So far the school of Neodharmaśāstra is concerned, the names of Candeśvara Thakkura, isra, Harinātha Ganeśvara Mišra, Ganeśvara Thakkura, Graheśvara Misra, Upādhyāya, Indrapati Thakkura, Lakşmīpati Upādhyāya, Miśaru Miśra, Padmanabha Datta, Premanidhi Thakkura, Rāmadatta Thakkura, Rudra- dhara Upadhyaya, Samkara Miśra, Sridatta Misra, Sridatta Upādhyāya, Vācaspati Upādhyāya, Vardhamana Upadhyaya and Vidyapati Upadhyaya to mention a few-hardly escape our notice.
There are a few among those of undying fame who had considerably influenced the tenets and ideas, terms and terminologies, matter and scope of discussion of the extant and later Nibandha-writers of Bengal. Of these, Śrīdatta Upādhyāya of the thirteenth century A.D. deserves special mention in as much as he is the earliest smrti-digest-writer of Mithila all of whose works are still available and he has often been referred to by Raghunandana of Bengal. The latter in his Astāvimsatitattva has not only mentioned Sridatta's name and works quite frequently but in many places admitted the spirit of his arguments and followed him with reverence also. He could not, however, agree with Śrīdatta on all points and he even criticized him from time to time-a fact that proves his intimate acquaintance with śrīdatta's works.
