Book Description

About The Book

Saint Kabir A most hand-hitting thinker-poet of iconoclastic mould, Kabir was also a reformer whose poems have such a ring of eternal truth that they appear ever-relevant. The book narrates not only his life-history called from his works and the authentic legends but also his Saakhis (Dohas) and 'Pada' (lyrical poems) with their original text, romanised version and Hindi- English translation.

About the Author

B.K. Chaturvedi, born in a village, Holipura (Agra, UP), on August 3, a reputed family, had his education in Allahabad (M.Sc.) and Bangalore 1945 in a. (Computer programming). Having served for a couple of years in HMT, he is now a freelance author, journalist, poet and translator based in New Delhi for about a couple of decades.

He has many articles/poems and books published in both Hindi and English to his credit. Prominent among them are the metered-verse English translation of the famous epic of modern Hindi, KAMAYANI; original long poem DEHA-DANSHA; English verse translation of Sahir Ludhyanvi's famous Nazm PARCHAAINYAN; the latest being a journalistic appraisal, KARGIL BETRAYAL. He has also rendered 'SRIMADBHAGWAT GITA' into Hindi & English, published a couple of years ago. His translation, both in Hindi and English, of 'SRI RAM CHARITA MANAS' is likely to be published soon. A profic writer he often writes for TV and Radio.

Preface

Kabir was essentially a reformer and it was a sheer chance that he chose poetry as the medium of communicating his views and thoughts. Perhaps he was helpless because it was the crying need of the times that had chose him as the medium to express their agonies. Kabir attained that unique status in society because he had the courage to say all those grim facts which the era longed earnestly for. In a sense, perhaps, his supposed illiteracy or lack of education proved to be a strong weapon in his hand since his ideas had no transmission-loss due to sophistry of language. His observations appear to emerge from the core of the heart. At times his crudity of language hits you with an inescepable blow.

The attempt in this present work has been to cover Kabir as comprehensively as possible with in the given space. That is why the main emphasis has been on his poems since they reveal his thoughts much better than the various commentaries on him. Also, since there is no authentic versions of his biography only those events of his life has been culled which are referred to in his poetic creations. The country is gratefully celebrating his 600th anniversary and it was found to be apt to add this shall flower of tribute from our side.

The author is ineffably grateful to Mittal brothers of 'Books For All' for giving him an opportunity to write freely and frankly on Kabir.
