This book is about minorities, and hence about majorities. It investigates how these categories are constituted in the modern political community. How are minorities identified by the notional mainstreams of our societies? What are the conditions of their being?

Violence is written into the making and continuation of contemporary political arrangements. Gyanendra Pandey calls this routine violence. His book is about is about the routine violence of contemporary history and politics, about the enabling conditions of violence.

Gyanendra Pandey, is Asa Griggs Candler Professor of History at Emory University, a founding member of 'Subaltern Studies', and the author of The Construction of Communalism in Colonial North India (1990) as well as Remembering Partition: Violence, Nationalism, and History in India (2001).
