Opportunity of this Edition has been taken by me to revise the book extensively with the object of presenting homoeopathic philosophy more comprehensively than before. The relative ad-vantages and disadvantages of various repertories available today to the practitioners, especially those of Kent and Boger-Boenninghausen, have been more clearly defined. As practice makes a man perfect, twenty exercises for repertorisation have been added for the first time. The chapter on "How to Study the Materia Medica" has been entirely re-written presenting a novel and realistic method. This chapter also includes significant ideas on the practical application of Materia Medica on the basis of the "minimum syndrome of maximum value," and by using the most peculiar and indispensable symptom/feature as a pivot around which the similimum can be searched for. Further, the minimum essential characteristics of ten remedies have also been given, as a model.
All in all, I look forward to this edition providing all the philosophical and practical guidance one may need in the practice of this wonderful science of healing - homoeopathy - on the lines handed down to us by masters of the art.
This book is an example of how humanity benefits when a dedicated person like Mr. S.M. Gunavante comes in touch with a man of vision like Dr. S.K. Mankad, who occupies a decision-making position in a social service organisation like the Dr. Subodh Mehta Medical Centre. It speaks much for Dr. Mankad's vision that he was "dreaming" of conducting a course in homoeopathy for modern medical graduates, and still more so that, when he met Mr. Gunavante, he did not take much time to recognise that this man though a lay homoeopath, could help him in realising his dream. For my part, I am glad that when in the middle of November 1980, Dr. Mankad requested me to guide him in the effort, I readily agreed. Since then Mr. Gunavante used to hand over to me the course lessons prepared by him and I used to guide him with suitable points for writing the next lesson.
Little had I realised in the early stages of this effort that the ultimate result would be a nice, comprehensive book on all aspects of homoeopathy, except for Materia Medica, which naturally has to be read at source from the pen of masters. What is striking about this book is that it is simple, lucid and takes the reader step by step so imperceptibly into the deeper aspects of the science that even a novice hardly realises that' he is already in the thick of it. The author has indeed taken great pains to consult various authoritative sources and present each aspect, be it the similimum, the provings, the evaluation of symptoms, the selection of the remedy, the potency question or the management of the case, with the mastery of detail that even veterans may find this to be a useful book of reference whenever needed.
I have no doubt that this book will help greatly in the further advancement of homoeopathy, and that whoever takes the trouble of studying it and follows the guidance given, will have little trouble in making his mark as a successful practitioner of homoeopathic medicine.
