Religion, education and women have made valuable contribution in improving the environment in India. The environment awareness and awakening among school and college children in recent years may have its positive fall out in the long run in contributing to the cause of environment. Taking note of poor awakening regarding the importance of preserving healthy environment around us. the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, issued direction to the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and state governments and through these to all the teaching institutes in the country to impart instructions to every student to understand the intricacies of environment degradation. Government of India has decided to make environmental education compulsory in the educational institutes all over the country as part of its efforts to increase awareness about environment. It is only through education that a child can be taught and made aware of the importance of clean environment and civic consciousness. To spread awareness about environment amongst children, the Centre has launched a scheme on environmental education and has initiated steps in this direction by starting National Green Corps (NGC) in the schools. As part of this scheme, the process of setting up 'Eco-Clubs' in schools is gaining momentum.
