Book Description
Preface

Ageing of population is a universal phenomenon. Numerous factors are affecting society now days. The impact of these factors generated multifold changes in the society. The structure of family, interdependence, migration, economic and educational status has affected the relationship between generations across the globe. Until recently, population ageing was seen as a phenomenon occurring mainly in the developed countries of Europe and North America. It is now recognized that both developed and developing countries are experiencing growing proportions of elderly population in developing countries, the population of aged is rising faster than the developed countries. In India the proportion of the population aged 60 years and above was 7 percent in 2009 (88 million) and is expected to increase to 20 percent (315 million) by the year 2050.

The proportion of aged population is gradually increasing which has long term implications on society and particularly on intergenerational religious in the family system. Find lay (2003) observed that as the population of aged increases more people will live alone. Social isolation amongst older people is emerging as one of the major issue in industrialized world. He emphasized on those interventions that target to reduce social isolation among older persons. Although numerous such interventions have been implemented worldwide. There is very little evidence to show that they work. He suggested that future intervention programmes should aimed to reduce social isolation of aged.

In traditional Indian society older people lived within a multi generational extended family comprising are or more adults, children, grand children and other kin. The aged enjoy honour, respect, and legitimate authority within the family, community and society. They have decision making responsibilities in economic religious, social and political activities of the family. However with the change of time the socio-cultural value system has been degraded besides declining of traditional family structure. The nuclear family has emerged in Indian society where the living of family members has reduced. This phenomena changed the responsibilities of family members and also affected the intergenerational relations with little respect and honour to older persons. Thus, the older persons are being neglected, abused, exploited and isolated to some extent. In view of the changing demographics and socio-cultural change in the Indian society. Government has made attempts to provide proper care and protection to older persons and also provide them rehabilitation services. Numbers of Ashrams, old age home and other age well centers have been set up by government, non government, private and corporate houses for the rehabilitation of aged.
