Introduction The 1960's were considered a 'development. Decade' and surprisingly enough the 1970's which followed the development decade, are called the 'decade of information'. If information is a pre-requisite for development, surely it should have preceded and not followed development. Perhaps this is why the development has not been as fast or as remarkable as it should have been. The recognition of the 1970's as the decade of information has led to the concentration of interest on books, libraries, information net works, international communication satellites and so on. 1972 was declared the International Book Year' and throughout the country there have been numerous library seminars, book exhibitions and book activities. What the impact of all this activity has been on the common man will perhaps be assessed sometime in the future.
