Introduction

The present volume is a compilation of papers on the multifarious aspects of the life, work and thought of Acharya Brajendra Nath Seal who may truly be termed as The Scholar Extraordinary. These papers were presented at the three day National Seminar entitled Rediscovering Acharya Brajendra Nath Seal in the New Millennium jointly organized by the Departments of Philosophy, Mathematics and Political Science, University of Kalyani from October 7-9, 2013. The volume begins with a curtain raiser by Prof. Dilipkumar Mohanta the then Vice Chancellor of the University portraying Acharya Seal as India's most original thinker and a champion of free thought and openness. He has very appositely highlighted the spirit of catholicity of ancient Indian philosophy which recognizes the merit of the opponent's point of view. Offering a panoramic view of the many sided genius of Acharya Seal, Prof. Mohanta depicts him as the sworn enemy of intellectual bigotry.

In an erudite paper, Prof. Dilip Kumar Sinha brings out the extensive range of the intellectual domain of Acharya Seal which encompasses diverse fields like Philosophy, Mathematics, Literature and History. Prof Sinha provides a scholarly discourse on the interface of Science, Philosophy and Mathematics as contemplated by. Acharya Seal with what Prof Sinha aptly describes as his Ubiquitous Intellect. Describing Acharya Seal as a New Grand Narrator, Prof. Kalyan Bagchi delves into his critique of Hegel's reflections on art and attempts an in depth analysis of his creative and original modification of the same. Considering Acharya B. N. Seal as the inheritor of the legacy of Plato, Aristotle and Hegel, he highlights how in Hegel's Philosophy of Art with its absolutist underpinnings, the content remained neglected.
