Preface
This is a series on Readings on Music representing a compilation of a wide range of articles by various authorities in the field of music. These lie scattered in a number of Journals, Souvenirs as well as Books which are not easily accessible to the lay public. The purpose of the present venture is to bring under one cover all this material in an appropriate sequence so as to portray a cogent picture of the different facets of Indian as well as Western music-particularly the historical, regional, philosophical, psychological, educational and comparative aspects.
Owing to limitations of space, it has not been possible to make the compilation as exhaustive as one might have wished. However, we have spared no pains to present as wide a spectrum of the subject as possible covering all important aspects of music. The authors form a representative cross section of active and eminent workers in the field. As such the compilation /should provide the general reader as well as lover of music valuable and interesting information on the subject.
It goes without saying that the present compilation would not have been possible without the co-operation of the Authors of the various articles as well as the Editors of the Journals in which they have appeared. We gratefully acknowledge their kindness in permitting us to reprint the articles appearing in this book.
Our thanks are due to M/s. Firma K.L. Mukhopadhyaya for allowing us to reprint the article 'Development of Music in Sanskrit' from their book 'Historical development of Indian Music' written by Swami Prajnananda.
Finally we wish to record our sincere thanks to the publishers, in accepting the book for publication and bringing out this volume - in record time.
