Ramkinkar Baij (1906-1980) was an artist of incomparable genius, a pathfinder of a novel art style in the realm of modern Indian sculpture. About the Author

Prasanta Daw (b 1943) an art critic of eminence has authored and edited several books on visual art, contributing regularly in renowned print and electronic media as well. In addition he has delivered lectures on many art subject and curated exhibitions. Also he has distinguished himself as a script writer and comperers on fine arts in All India Radio and Doordarshan over a prolonged period. He writes extensively on modern Indian art. In recognition of invaluable contribution in the realm of visual art, Shri Daw has been conferred the life time achievement award by Paschim Banga Bangla Academy in 2007. He lives and works in Kolkata.

In the evolution of modern Indian sculpture the contribution of Ramkinkar Baij is vital as well as significant. He had denied the smack of western academics that prevailed for the last few centuries and of course, his art works had the refinement of his personal identity as well. Ramkinkar was born in a remote village of Bankura district, West Bengal in a poor family. Since childhood he had an irresitible passion and desire for becoming an artist. Although the going was relentlessly hard, his boundless spirit never broke and he continued to grow in his destined direction. It is needless to say that despite many hardships he fulfilled his will. And how he achieved that, now is a tale to be told to all.

Reflecting what we discussed so far above a few selective articles in similar lines have been written by renowned artists and distinguished scholars. Those pieces are incorporated in this book, along with a significant conversation with Ramkinkar. A wide variety of included articles reveals diverse information and analysis on his remarkable art as well as an interesting life of the illustrious luminary. Any one who would love to read art books and particularly curious to learn about Ramkinkar, would find this book may enriching very informative.

Some of the incorporated essays in this book were written by Paritosh Sen, Ganesh Pyne, Probhas Sen have already been printed in 'Anyamane' published in Bengali calendar year 1379. Another article written by K.G. Subramanyan was previously appeared in the catalogue of Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata in 1972. Also an assesment of Ramkinkar by Janak Jhankar Narzary was printed in Nandan Volume No xxvi, 2006, Kala Bhavana, Bisva Bharati. I acknowledge my gratitude to the above institutions for permission to reproduce. In addition I express my first and foremost gratitude to those authors whose scholarly essays have been included in this treatise.
