Rajani Kanta Bardoloi (1867-1939) is one of those pioneering writers who seriously worked for the development of novel as a literary form in Assamese literature. He essentially belonged to that section of the intelligentsia who were exposed to the newly introduced western education in the schools and colleges of Calcutta. Their indomitable urge to cultivate their own language and literature helped them flourish a humanistic and romantic literature signifying a break from the prevailing medieval religious literature on one hand and start experi- ments on new forms and literary genres on the other. It is this new spirit that shaped Rajani Kanta Bardoloi's attitude to life, his concept of love, his exploration of the history of Assam, and his search for the new genre. An eminent writer with rich and varied experience, he made a synthe- sis of the twain the western form and the Indian spirit-in his unique fictional creations.
