Sanskrit Academy Series-113
Sanskrit Academy is now bringing out a book titled Rajadharma composed by Kavyakalanidhi, Shatavadhani Sri Pisupati Chidambara Shastry. The manuscript of this book was given to Sanskrit Academy by Sri Pisupati Vasudeva Sharma. This Vasudeva Sharma was the son of Sri Vishveshwara Shastry who composed an authentic commentary to the present book Rajadharma in Sanskrit. This manuscript was written in Telugu script. Sri Pisupati Chidambara Shastry a versatile scholar of Sanskrit and Telugu languages composed nine books in Sanskrit and twenty nine in Telugu. He belonged to Karividi village in Prakasham district of Andhra Pradesh. He was a court poet of Mysore kingdom and honored by the King Sri Rama Varma of Travancore kingdom. Present Kavya Rajadharma consists of two cantos with 118 slokas. The concept of Rajadharma was introduced by Sri Vedavyasa in the epic Mahabharata. It refers to the laws or rules prescribed for the rulers in the context of ensuring proper administration of the entire kingdom. Manusmriti, Yajnavalkyasmriti and some other Smriti books have also mentioned about the concept of Rajadharma and laid down certain rules called as Dharmasutras. They too have defined the rights and duties of the king which are to be followed by him strictly to maintain good governance in the Kingdom. In ancient times the entire discipline of political science was called as Rajadharma. According to these the King should possess the qualities of mother, father, preceptor, protector and also the attributes of the gods such as fire, wealth, wind and others. They have also mentioned certain rules for the appointment of officials to cater to the administration. Keeping this vast literature on Rajadharma in view, Sri Chidambara Shastry who attained mastery over Dharmashastra literature, has composed this simple book on Rajadharma. This would definitely facilitate the readers to understand the Rajadharma easily. I appreciate the sincere efforts of Dr. Santosh kumar Joshi research assistant in Academy. He has good knowledge on manuscripts and also on Sahitya Shastra and well acquainted with knowledge of typography. He has done a thorough study of this manuscript, took every care and made directly a D. T. P. copy ready for publication. I acknowledge the help of two Deputy directors Dr. V. Subrahmanayam, Dr. K.
