It is gratifying to note that a booklet entitled Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, A Sesquicentennial Tribute by Dr. Soma Basu is being published by the School of Vedic Studies, Rabindra Bharati University. Rabindranath and Narendranath, two luminaries in the sky of 19th century Bengal aroused the minds of the people to look into things in a new perspective and to live a simple but progressive life on the basis of the great teachings of the old Indian intellectual tradition. Both the giant personalities were close to each other in their thoughts and activities and contributed immensely towards building of a new awakened India in their own individual ways. We cannot but pay our respectful homage to both of them and imbibe their true spirit of love and action in the context of their 150th birth anniversaries.
Asa mark of respect to these two great thinkers, the School of Vedic Studies organized lectures, seminars and cultural programs and fondly remembered their glorious lives, activities, teachings, writings etc. This research center also planned to publish books on various aspects of their lives and thoughts which can be wonderful messages to the present generation and humanity at large. Dr. Soma Basu, Associate Professor of the School, came forward to prepare a booklet on Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda in one volume so that interested persons can have an idea of their contributions in different fields like culture, civilization, education, philosophy, religion, Vedantic views, Vaisnavism, literary forms, art in the forms of painting and photography, etc. I congratulate Dr. Basu for such a good attempt which is very relevant too. I thank all those persons who have rendered valuable assistance towards the publication of this monograph. Any suggestion for its improvement in future will be greatly appreciated.
