Qurratulain Hyder (1927-2007) is a very prominent Urdu novelist and short story writer. Beginning her literary career in 1943, she wrote approximately seventy-five stories which are included in her five collections of stories. She also wrote nine novels, five novelettes and eleven reportages. In addition to this she also translated from various languages a number of articles, sketches, children's stories and novels into Urdu. Devoted to a career in journalism all her life, she made dozens of documentary films and pursued her interest in music, sculpture and painting. She also wrote hundreds of journalistic pieces in English. Hyder was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Award, Jnanpith Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and numerous other awards.
Jameel Akhtar (b. 1958) is an eminent Urdu critic and researcher, with Urdu fiction being his special area of interest and research. He has authored and edited more than forty books on different subjects which include complete works of Qurratulain Hyder, complete works of Balwant Singh (in eight volumes), Gopi Chand Narang's Zindaginama, and Qurratulain Hyder's Zindaginama. He has also been honoured with various literary awards.
