Foreword

Prof. P. Chenna Reddy and Dr. M. Sarat Babu have rendered a service to all of us who hold Prof. Alan Dundes close to our hearts, and who try, in our academic work, to follow in his giant footsteps. In specific, singular ways, this volume honors the memory of Alan Dundes. Importantly Prof. Reddy and Dr. Babu have drawn together contributions from international scholars - from scholars in Australia, Great Britain, India, Israel, Nigeria, and the United States. As Professor Dundes would frequently say, "Folklore is nothing if it is not international." Thus in this volume, the editors have put into practice the words of Alan Dundes. Additionally, the editors have drawn together articles on the rich genres of folklore articulated in cultural context. The list is long and impressive, so I will enumerate: folk narratives, including personal narratives, urban legends, legends and the supernatural, stories about the trickster, proverbs and riddles; Jewish folklore and Jewish folk narratives; folk artists and the healing arts; folk music and oral poetry; dance; ethnic identity through folklore; critical theory about folk narrative study and psychoanalytic theory; oral literary criticism; folklore and globalization; and digital folklore. The volume is framed by the biography of this larger-than-life figure, Alan Dundes, who reaches out to us so poignantly and so persistently even after the twelve years since his passing. By producing and publishing this volume in India, Prof. Reddy and Dr. Babu have also paid a special tribute to the memory of Alan Dundes. A country so rich and alive in myriad folk traditions, India sparked Alan Dundes's imagination and scholarship. To Dr. T. N. Shankaranarayana of the Kuvempu University, Alan Dundes wrote, "Let me say again how much I appreciated your active participation in the [Ford Foundation] seminar. Your obvious enthusiasm and love of folklore made my visit to India worthwhile as I always enjoy seeing how much other scholars appreciate folklore." Alan and Carolyn Dundes's dear friend, A. K. Ramanujan, whom they had met in their graduate school days at Indiana University in Bloomington, wrote to Professor Dundes in 1987. In effect, he traced the efflorescence of folklore studies in India through his own work.
