Dr Prabha Borwankar graduated in allopathy (MBBS) in 1954. She went on to acquire postgraduate diploma in Gynaecology and Obstetrics. General practice in Mumbai kept her busy for thirty years. She realized that allopathy had its limits, creating a deadlock in the treatment of certain disorders, While researching for the ways to get over this, she was led to acupuncture. Following up what seemed a promising mode of treatment, she went to Hong Kong for learning acupuncture at source. She has been practising acupuncture with heartening success for the last 25 years. By constant research and study Dr Borwankar has forged ahead on her own, discovering new points and modes of treatment which have proved most successful.
She is a regular member at International Conferences in Sri Lanka and Scandinavian countries on acupuncture. Currently she is involved with teaching acupuncture and has trained over a hundred doctors in this mode of treatment.
She has done her Ph.D. in acupuncture from Sri Lanka in 1983, She is one of the foremost acupuncturists in India and she is second in the world to write a book on acupuncture for students after Late Dr Anton Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka.
This book is an account of my many years of experience in acupuncture practise and teaching. I hope it will be a helpful guide to students.
In personal opinion every acupuncturist must have a knowledge of homeopathy, as the basic principle of both is the same, namely, vital energy which is to be strengthened to protect the body from the external attacking force.
I have tried to simplify the subject as much as possible and have also given ample case histories. In the portion of therapeutics, attempts have been made to justify each and every point recommended. Besides, acupuncture of the ear, scalp, hand, face, wrist and ankle have been death with in detail. Students will also be helped in therapeutics, by the mnemonic way of remembering the points in this book.
Choosing the points with the help of pulse diagnosis, five elements and organ clock, will grant the students a thorough grounding in the subject. An attempt has been made to suggest effective combinations of points as observed by me throughout my clinical experience.
The second half of this century has seen in people with a greater awareness of health care. Though modern western medicine has mushroomed as a worldwide giant industry, there appears to be growing concern for methods which rely on nature and natural inbuilt body mechanisms and chemicals. This concern is manifested in those members of the medical profession whose prior aim is the well-being of their patients. Hence, more and more western medicine doctors are researching other schools of medicine like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Magneto therapy, etc
This book seeks to emphasize that no one school is perfect in all aspects. The author, a well-known acupuncturist today was practising allopathic medicine for 25 years, has sized up the raison d'etre of her book, "A committed doctor must be willing to explore all avenues to provide relief to her patients' This is what set her on a voyage to discovery that encompassed Homeopathy and Acupuncture.
Her simple and clearly written work with practical approach is enriched with valuable experience of her practice as an acupuncturist. It is eminently clear that Dr. Prabha Borwankar has practised and is practising acupuncture most successfully, using it as an adjuvant therapy in conjunction with western medicine and homeopathy to achieve her golden target-the well-being of the patient. Through experience Dr. Borwankar has discovered some new points of treatment, effective for some chronic ailments. Her direct and practical approach should prove extremely beneficial to others, who have her ideals and desire to follow the study and practice acupuncture.
