The present work addresses itself to analyzing the spatio-temporal changes in population and land use. The introduction provides a comprehensive picture of the region, its climate, drainage, population structure and economy.

The spatial pattern is delineated in all its aspectsthe general land use, agricultural land use, crop combination, intensity of cropping, agricultural regions, population distribution, density, distribution of social groups of population, population growth, population projection, problems associated with them and urban land uses. Essentially problem oriented, this work provides a deep insight into the problems of the people of the region. Geographers, sociologists, agriculturists, economists, politicians and those involved in planning land use and population will find this work and invaluable.

GEETA DEVEE (b. 1960) is an Associate Professor and Head, Department of Geography, M.C. College, Barpeta, Assam. She graduated from Cotton College in Geography (Hons.) and did her Masters degree from North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and got her Ph.D. from Gauhati University. Dr. Devee has attended several seminars, presented and published research papers in relevant issues. She is a life member of national and international societies.

The role of population in land use has been the subject of long standing debate. The population size, structure, change and other demographic variable are of interest to a wide range of analysts, including policy-makers, scientists and planners in industry and government. This book an attempt of giving an idea about demography, migration and land use as well as examine that changing pattern of land use which is influenced by the changing pattern of population. It covers spatial characteristics of population such as distribution, density, religion, immigration and its socio-economic influences. It also deals with the changing nature of general land use, agricultural land use, cropping pattern, crop- combination, agricultural regionalization and urban land use. A micro level in depth study has incorporated to interpret the socio-temporal changes of population and land use.
