This book deals with a significant period in the Political History of Kerala. Besides the National freedom movements, there are several popular movements, with their focus on issues of local importance. Such movements in Travancore, Cochin and Malabar regions of Kerala is thoroughly discussed in the Political History of Modern Kerala.

Born on December 18, 1925 at Ernakulam. Completed his M.A. Degree in History as a private candidate from the University of Madras with first rank in 1948. Went to Harvard University on a Fulbright Travel Grant and a Smith-Mundt Scholarship and secured masters degree in Political Science from there with specialisation in International Relations. Worked in various capacities such as professor of History, State Editor of the Kerala Gazetteers, Registrar of the University of Kerala and UGC visiting Professor in the University of Calicut. Held many other positions during his eventful career. Apart from compiling eight District Gazetteers of Kerala he was written more than 25 books in English and Malayalam.
In my A Survey of Kerala History published in 1967 the political movements in modern Kerala have been given only cursory treatment. It was felt that the subject should receive a little more attention in view of its topical interest. This monograph is the outcome of my efforts in this direction. As the inclusion of the revised material in A Survey of Kerala History would have disturbed the symmetry of the original text, it was decided to publish the same separately as a kind of supplement to the earlier book. I hope that the general reader and the student would find this book useful. - A . Sreedhara Menon
