0.N.V. Kurup Prof. ONV Kurup, is considered as a doyen in many respects in the realm of modem Malayalam literature. Born in 1931, at Chavara, a village in South Kerala, ONV spent his childhood in an environment of classical art and literature . He had his schooling at his native village and graduated from SN College Kollam. He did his post graduation at University College Trivandrum and worked as a Professor in Malayalam at various Government Colleges of Kerala. He had been the Chair-man of Kerala Kalamandalam and a member of the executive board of Sahitya Akademi. During his college days, he was involved with the progressive movements and began his literary career as a trailblazer of progressive literature. Later his poetry encompassed in itself, all that contribute to the flowering of humanity. From poems of strict subjectivity he rose to poems of cosmic dimension; from anthologies he rose to poems in fiction such as Ujjayini and Swayamvaram. Ujjayini. deals with the conflict between art and power, whereas Swayamvaram addresses the pitiable plight of womanhood. Apart from being a distinguished poet of our times, he is noted lyricist, who bagged national award in the year 1989. The state award came in search of him, not once or twice, but as many as 13 times. In 1971 ONV received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for his anthology 'Agnisalabhangali. He got Sahitya Akademi Award for `Akshararn', in 1975. The list of laurels include Vayalar Award, Soviet Land Nehru Award, Bharatheeya Bhasha Parishad Bhilwara Award, Asan Prize, Ulloor Award, Ourram Joshua National Award for poetry, G centenary award, etc. Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the most distinguished award being given by the State Government to tower-ing literary personality was conferred on him in 2008. Jnanpith award for 2007 is bestowed on him in 2010. He is also recently honoured with Patmavibhushan, the second highest civilian honour of Govt. of India.
