In a nutshell, the book is an Encyclopedia of Spagyrics or Plant Alchemy.
This book presents an excellent modern introduction to the ancient tradition of spagyric medicine. Some spagyric methods and concepts are clearly visible in Steiner's formulation of Anthroposophical Medicine, yet the term and its methods fell into disuse and have been rendered invisible for the last five centuries. This book therefore illuminates a largely forgotten area of medical history and medical practice. Spagyric medicine has been mostly associated with the names of Paracelsus and Van Helmont, who assembled the system from ancient fragments. Such methods of drug identification and preparation, in the European tradition, probably stretch back to the ancient Egyptians, Yet such medical systems were also active in ancient China and India, for example, pointing to an even more ancient confluence of pharmaceutical ideas and methods, and thus a more universal basis for spagyric drug preparation methods.
The Spagyric system does not come down to us bereft of an underpinning philosophy or set of fundamental principles. Along with the methods, these principles feature heavily in this uniquely insightful book. The reader will also find here a helpful glossary of equipment, terms, formulae (recipes) and symbols along with several useful methodologies of those key figures (such as Mattei, Zimpel, Krauss, et al) who rescued it from lost fragments and who thus played a major role in the recovery, development, preservation and exposition of spagyric principles and methods. Like a secret river flowing in darkness, spagyric medicine has been ignored and neglected for too long. This book serves to rekindle in the modern world an interest in the timeless value of spagyric methods and principles.
Alchemy is the science of transforming and purifying substances providing insights into psychology, the inner archetypal structure of human thinking and feeling. Plant Alchemy is a type of mysticism in which alchemical transformation of plant materials are explored with mystical experiences. Alchemy gave impulses toward the preparation of medicinal remedies (mainly essential oils, plant extracts and essences) and considered the precursor science for pharmacology. The preparation of alchemical or spagyric remedies is an ancient art of Indian origin. Gems are often used in Vedic astrology to mitigate negative influences of planets on human being. Philosopher's stone (cintamani) is one of the goals of alchemy. The name "alchemy" is derived from the arabic el-kimya, khem being the name for Egypt where it was practiced even before the Christian era. It blended with the magic and mysticism of the legendary Hermes Trismegistus which became known as the Hermetic philosophy.
