This is the call of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. It is the daily morning reveille at his Ashram in Poona; it is the call he has been making for over twenty years. 7 .

"The Perfect Way" is early-Rajneesh. 1964. Thirteen years ago. The discourses and ques- tion-and-answer sessions in this volume came out of his first testing of a new idea, the medi- tation camp. He envisaged an intensive pro- gramme lasting several days and allowing seekers to dive totally into an atmosphere of meditation. That initial camp was held in early June in a quiet spot in the hills of Rajasthan, and Bhagwan has used the camp format ever since. At the Rajneesh Foundation Ashram in Poona one ten-day camp is held every month.

In 1964 Bhagwan was a professor of philosophy at the University of Jabalpur, one of the major cities in his native state of Madhya Pradesh. This first camp was held on one of his vacations, but two years later he left teaching to devote all his energies to God, to helping others see and realize what he has known, to helping others attain the flowering inherent in each of us.

The Truth dawned on Bhagwan on the night of March 21, 1953. And he has been calling others to the same realization ever since. Those who knew him years ago recall an earnest and somewhat eccentric young man always involved in some sort of bizarre experiment jogging backwards, floating downstream on his back for miles, running for hours before breakfast, jumping off cliffs into rivers and talking, talking, ceaselessly talking. He spoke at public gatherings; he challenged people on street corners; he talked to groups of friends in private homes; he travelled the trains speaking to anyone who would listen. They tell stories of his being jeered, threatened, stoned, imprisoned. But no matter how hard they resisted the Truth or how hard or how subtly we resist it now Bhagwan kept on and keeps on calling. 15,000 words a day. 105,000 words a week. 5,500,000 words a year. Although the call is basically the same, you'll find a much different being in Poona today than the young revolutionary who de- livered the talks at that first camp. His approach then was scientific, structured; his present tactics defy labelling. He has moved beyond the traditional practices he suggests in these pages to the development of the most unique, dynamic, amazing and ego/suppression-shatter- ing meditation techniques this homeland of yoga has ever seen. He has turned into a very tricky devil indeed. He shocks, seduces, stuns, soothes, spanks, spins spicy and sensational stories and sends his sannyasins spiralling into incredible spaces — and incredible growth.

But if you’ve never seen buddhahood, no words, no pages of ‘"‘s’s’" can convey the experience.
