Dr. P.V. Ramankutty's present labour of love is such praiseworthy attempt recapture the past, a to to rediscover Sanskrit literature as the expression of the sublime thoughts of gifted human beings, who, removed as they are from the contemporary world by time, nevertheless speak our own language. Such concerted effort to examine our past from obscurity and oblivion are indeed the need of the hours.
I have great pleasure to publish Dr.P.V.Ramankutty's collection of research papers entitled 'Peeps and Perceptions' as the twentieth book in the Calicut University Sanskrit Series.
Dr. Ramankutty is now serving as Reader and Head of the Department of Sanskrit of the Government Sanskrit College, Pattambi, one of the centres of Excellence recognised by the Government of Kerala and founded by late Punasšeri Nilakantha Sarma, renowned Sanskrit scholar, and educationist. Having taken the post-graduate degree in Sanskrit Sahitya with first class and first rank from the Sanskrit College, Pattambi, he joined as a teacher in the same college. and he has been teaching Sanskrit there for more than three decades. The University of Calicut awarded him the degree of Ph.D. in 1992. Apart from the book, Curse as a Motif in the Mahabharata, Dr.Ramankutty has several papers to his credit.
Jawaharlal Nehru once lamented that much of the value of Sanskrit literature has been lost to the contemporay reader in the labyrinth of textual and arid scholarship labouring under the signpost of Indology. Perceptive students of Sanskrit, who are tuned to the refined sensibilities of contemporay literature have been trying to undo this distortion and to retrieve the enduring elements of this wonderful legacy. Dr. P. V. Ramankutty's present labour of love is such a praiseorthy at- tempt to recapture the past, to rediscover Sanskrit Literature as the expression of the sublime thoughts of gifted human beings, who, re- moved as they are from the contemporary world by time, neverthless speak our own language. Equally well versed in traditional and modern literary theory, Dr. Ramankutty is equal to the difficult task embarked on by him. Such concerted efforts to recover our past from obscurity and oblivion are indeed the need of the hour.
