PASSIONS is an English translation of Sahitya Akademi award-winning collection of poems Amaar. All the poems contained in this volume are marked with romantic outpouring of emotions, visual imagery, and overwhelming lyricism. Nostalgic ruminations, both personal and collective, are found in every line of Shaida's poetry. This collection is an authentication of the personality of an innocent, passionate, dreamy, aesthete and emotional person. The author, Shaida appears as a man who is essentially a Kashmiri in synthesising the beauty of Shalimars, moonlit nights, cascades, saffron flowers, henna-dyed hands, and more than that the beauty of Rasool Mir's poetry.
SHAFI SHAIDA (1941-2015) chose to write in Kashmiri when he was a student of S.P. College and was published in all major journals and dailies of the time, winning wide acclaim. He was influenced by the leading Urdu poets of the 20th century while he studied at Aligarh Muslim University. He made a selection of all his poems in late seventies and published them; some of his poems are left out. Many of his lyrics sung by some leading singers of the valley are very popular.
