The present book also deals with the subject matter in a similar fashion as described in the Ayurvedic classics such as Charaka Samuita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridayam and Madhava Nidanam. The only difference is its clinical application as on today in the major Ayurvedic hospitals and Research Centres to tune to the modem conditions of living.

Foreword

The term Ayurveda connotes science of life. It is the science which deals with the life of human beings. It deals in particular with the maintenance of the body and to promote long life without any ailments. Apart from this, Ayurveda is a science that bestows the knowledge on us to maintain the body and mind in a state of equilibrium by adopting the basic principles of it was enshrined in "Asthanga Ayurveda".

Understanding, assimilating, and putting into practice the basic principles is the first and foremost approach for upliftment and progress of a person or a country or any science. Hence, Acharya Charaka, A Sushruta, and Vaghbhatta practiced and advocated Ayurveda from philosophical state to metaphysical state.

Bringing up a person in a positive and promotive way is an investment for the future of mankind in terms of human resources. Person needs proper programming for the development in terms of physical, physiological, psychological, sociological and moral values. A society with ill equipped persons either physical of moral could weaken the society. Ayurveda can contribute to the society in such a waxy calamity.

At this present juncture, Dr. A.T. Makuri Vinaya Kumara, is bringing out his book on "Principles of Ayurveda Therapeutics", produced in collaboration with the Society for Advancement of Research and Development of Integrated Medicine (SARDIM), a Registered Organisation under Hyderabad Public Societies Act (AP).

I feel it is a great honour conferred on me to write the foreword to this excellently brought out volume. This book is the result of strenuous efforts of the author in referring and collecting vast matter from the scattered scientific sources on Ayurveda. The author is the Director of Matrusri Medical centre and centre for Alternative Medicine Therapy, Hyderabad. He is a well qualified practitioner and consultant of Modern School of Medicine and is one of the best clinicians I have known. However, whenever Allopathy fails to help the patient, he advises and uses Alternative therapies like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and Acupuncture. He has also taken deep interest in the literary and clinical aspects of alternative medicine and is carrying out clinical research for the past two decades. It is beyond doubt that Ayurveda has attained the status of the best alternative therapy among all other systems of medicine. That is why, World Health Organisation "has opened a separate cell on alternative systems of medicine and is seriously searching for therapeutic clues with the help of these systems.

In this treatise like volume, he surveyed Ayurvedic literature to the greatest extent and also incorporated some of the articles of eminent and distinguished authors of Ayurveda. It is an essence of Ayurvedic therapeutics principles to the practitioners, research scholars as well as student community of all systems of medicine. The treatiseis in accordance with the principles laid down in Ayurveda, and is well presented with the inclusion of the latest scientific data.

This book gives immense pleasure to the reader and is a good companion to the students and research scholars alike. I would like to conclude with an appreciation and advise the author to bring out some more useful works of this kind in future.

I once again express my happiness to associate myself with this work by writing the foreword to It.

"I wish him success in all walks of his life".

Preface

The present volume titled ‘PANCHAKARMA THERAPY IN AYURVEDA’ is the fifth in the Series authored by me. The previous volumes were titled ‘Principles of Ayurvedic Therapeutics’ (Vol. 1) published by the renowned Sri Satguru Publications, a division of Indian Book Centre, Delhi (India), since the year 1995.

The present book has been divided into three main sections consisting of General Considerations, Methodology and Abstracts of Clinical Research Reports on Panchakarma Therapy. First section dealts with an Introduction to Panchakarma Therapy, followed by Tridosha Principle, Causation of Disease, Abnormalities of Tridoshas, and a chapter on Principles of Diagnosis and Treatment. In the Methodology section, Salient features of Panchakarma Therapy along with detailed coverage of each type of treatment, viz., Snehana, Swedana, Vamana, Virechana, Vasti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana have been dealt with. Clinical Reports had been enclosed under each type to understand the theory in practice, In the third part, Abstracts of the Clinical Research Reports of some important chronic diseases where Panchakarma treatment is very much advocated has been included. Appendix contains some of the apparatus used in the treatment along with some clinical photographs and an index of glossary of medicinal plants and substances and an index of diseases. A table of weights and measures used often in the therapy were included for proper understanding of the subject and its application.

Panchakarma is a long recognised therapeutic modality practised in one way or the other throughout the world by physicians to alleviate the suffering humanity but practised in a systematic manner by traditional Ayurvedists. The ancient Ayurvedic literature deals with the subject elaborately and is being practiced even today in the country, quite satisfactorily. The present book also deals with the subject matter in a similar fashion as described in the Ayurvedic classics such as Charaka Samita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridayam and Madhava Nidanam. The only difference is its clinical application as on today in the major Ayurvedic hospitals and Research Centres to tune to the modern conditions of living.

As has been stressed in the previous volumes, in the present series, Clinical Research orientation has taken precedence in the description and authenticity. These reports and results are well authenticated and documented by Ayurvedic Research Scholars and published in reputed journals in the country especially those from the Central Council of Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS), a Govt. of India undertaking, IMS, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (UP); Gujarat Ayurved in University, Jamnagar, Gujarat; Indian Institute of Panchakarma, Cheruthuruthy, Kerala; Arya Vadya Sala, Kottakkal, Kerala; Ayurvedic Research Unit, Bhubaneswar, Orissa and certain other private institutions and Hospitals in the country.

I hope that such a way of presentation of the subject matter helps in understanding and interpreting easily and lays a strong foundation for Ayurvedic Medicine in the modern scientific parlance which will be acceptable to everyone concerned in the medical profession.

Clinical Research appears to be essential in view of the divergent opinions expressed by the Ayurvedists in understanding the subject, the efficacy of the drugs used, the mode of the administration in specific diseases as described in Ayurvedic classics and their relevance to the present times. Since 3000 years, many climatic, | geographical, and social transformations have occurred on the mother planet Earth and in the World. Many valuable species of flora and fauna have become extinct. Potency of the plant extracts is less marked compared to before and the Bala (Strength) and Ojas (Immunity) of the Human race appears to be less. New diseases have come up. Even though, infectious diseases are well controlled by modern medicine and technologies, non-infectious diseases such as Diabetes, Cancer, Hypertensions, psychiatric disorders and stress related disorders are on the rise.
