The Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal has been conducting Annual Ayurveda Seminars in connection with the founder's Day Celebrations since 1964 and All India Essay Competitions since 1965. The proceedings of seminars and prize winning essays are being published regularly. They cover a wide range of topics. and have become a veritable source of information to the students and researchers in the field of ayurveda. 'PAKSAGHATAM (HEMIPLEGIA)' was the topic for essay competition in 1991.

Introduction
Vata is regarded as synonym for life. Vata is the prime doșa among the three important controlling factors of the body i.e. Tridosas. Vāta is vulnerable to provocation due to a variety of factors. Though väta is responsible for all the cestas (movements) of the body in normal state, it leads to disorders due to its obstruction."4 Dhamanipraticaya is the most important underlying phenomenon leading to obstruction in the channels of the body. It is interesting to note that dhamanipraticaya or atherosclerosis is associated with vätaprakopa in many ways.
