The History of Orissa under Maratha is a contested terrain. Colonial historian has painted the grim picture of Maratha atrocities while the local historian defended everything Indian. But both parties failed to utilize the Marathas sources in modi script of the past and the Persian sources which was the state language of the Maratha Raj. The present author has successful in the judicious use of sources of all language while maintaining the balance of Historical criticism. The book illuminate the darkness of the forlorn province, helps to see the multi faced history of the province.
Dr. Prabhakar Gadre, D.Litt, an authority of the Maratha History with speciality of the Nagpur State, has authored many books on the various aspect of the Nagpur history. Then he under took the herculean job of collecting, editing and publishing source material of many languages in 18 volumes. So far he has been successful in publishing ten volume throwing valuable light on the many aspect of the Nagpur State, including political correspondence, provincial studies, revenue reports and religious centers for the help of future generations.
In the eighteenth century the power of the Marathas was felt, either directly or indirectly throughout the whole of India. Often hailed as liberator of their home land from the Mughal Empire, they do not always appear in such a role in other parts of India, and their rule was not always an unmixed blessing.
