Shashi Deshpande is one of those eminent Indian novelist in English whose works have been admired both at home and abroad. Her work is comparable to that of the other eminent Indian writers the Anita Desai and Kamala Markandaya. As a novelist she is deeply concerned with the subjective sealities of human existence. Through the sensitive portrayal of the psychic conflicts of her fictional characters, Shashi Deshpande lays bare the oppressive and anti-human value system of Indian society. However, her novels and on apositive note as all her leading characters are able to gather their shattered bits of 'self' and reorganise themselves, the present book is a study of the psychic conflicts of Deshpande's fictional characters and of their fresh insights into the significance of life by reaching out to the other human beings.
