To tell the story of a one hundred year old University is a really fascinating journey that one can embark upon. The road to the destination is filled with excitement, curiosity, drama, despair and above all a serise of accomplishment once we reach the goal. This is exactly how I felt in the four years of my tenure as the Vice Chancellor of one of the most prestigious universities in the country The University of Mysore.
What is it that I am trying to say? it is not just the tenure that has been most challenging but a sense of accomplishment as the University built upon strong, solid foundations turned One Hundred and who have been a student, teacher and finary the Vice Chancellor have been a part of this great saga. My obeisance is to the founders Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Sir M. Visvesvaraya who together set up the University of Mysore on July 27, 1916. From their selection of the first Vice Chancellor H. V. Nanjundayya, to bringing the brightest and most talented teachers to the University, they showed their thinking and the ideas about higher education.
To capture the one hundred years in visual form is very interesting. There is a very apt saying: ‘A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words. Hence, we decided to trace the one hundred year history of the University in the form of photographs. These 300 pages of visual delight starts with ancient systems of education, then moves to the origin of the University and takes the connoisseurs through the versus departments and finally culminates in the photographic journey of the year-long celebrations starting from July 27, 2015 and ending on july 22, 2016.
From designing of the Centenary logo composing the Centenary Theme Song, to the Centenary lecture series, the 103rd Indian Science Congress, the seminars, conferences winning of the Indira Gandhi NSS award and bringing out the historic Centenary Commemorative coins, the Coffee Table Book captures every single detail.
A lot of effort has gone into the making of this Coffee Table Book and extensive research has been done to dig deep and get the many interesting and fascinating aspects of making of the University, it is very difficult to recognise the contribution of each and every one in a work of this magnitude. But the Karnataka Governor Shri. Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah, Higher Education Ministers Shri. R.V. Deshpande and Shri Basavaraj Rayareddy and Higher Education Department Principal Secretary need a special mention for their support and encouragement throughout the Centenary Celebrations.
It is also very important to recognise the contribution of the Syndicate members, the Academic Council, Deans, the heads of departments, the Crawford Hall staff, the editorial advisors, the research team, the MC&A executive publisher and the printer who have all made this book possible.
A book containing one hundred years history will definitely have omissions and commissions A work of this nature is always a work in progress. It is for the coming generations to fill the gaps and march on.
Wish you all a happy and nostalgic turning of pages of One Hundred Years-University of Mysore'!
