Omkar Nath Koul (1941-2018) got his training in linguistics and language related areas at the University of Kashmir, at K. M. Institute of Hindi Studies and Linguistics, Agra University, and later at the University of Illinois, USA. Having trained himself as a professional linguist, he worked on different areas of Kashmiri language. Basing himself on the established cognitive model of language learning and analysis, he brought out detailed studies of its phonology, morphology, syntax and also its socio-linguistic features. Omkar Nath Koul developed the latest methods of language teaching for the learning of Kashmiri both for native and non-native learners and produced a wide range of textual and supplementary materials. Omkar Koul also helmed prestigious institutions like the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore and helped frame language policies at the national level and supervised their implementation. He has left a large number of publications on linguistics and language related areas.
In this monograph, Pankaj Bhan has traced the growth of Omkar Nath Koul as a leading linguist and has put in perspective his pioneering work on Kashmiri language, its structure, its socio-linguistic features and also its pedagogy.
Pankaj Bhan (1951) retired in a faculty position from a Delhi University college. He writes, edits and translates. With likeminded persons, he started an NGO called Kasheer Foundation devoted to highlighting and disseminating the composite culture and heritage of Kashmir and edits a journal in English called Miraas (meaning 'heritage') on its behalf.
