Preface

The greatest crisis with the living entities is self-forgetfulness; the greatest attainment in one's life is to know oneself.

"Gnothi Seauton" or "Know thyself' said Socrates.

The great poet Alexander Pope wrote:

Know then thyself, presume not God to scan The proper study of Mankind is Man The ancient seers of India also advocated "atamanam veti".

Srimad Bhagavad Gita delivers one from the state of identity crisis and awakens him into the state of self-realization. Out of many a path described in the Gita to know oneself, Karmayoga is rendered by the Godhead as the best, simplest and the easiest to attain self-realization. One may go in for cultivation of knowledge (Gyan Yoga) or adhere to any practice of worship, devotion or meditation but for an embodied soul, knowing the Inconceivable is beyond the approach of the senses.

The dearest friend of Krishna, Udhav's Gyanyoga fades into insignificance when he comes to face the devotion of the Gopis of Brindaban. Action is inevitable. There is none who is free from the modes of activities.

न तदस्ति पृथिव्यां वा दिवि देवेषु वा पुनः ।

सत्वं प्रकृतिजैर्मुक्तं यदेभिः स्यात्त्त्रिभिर्गुणैः ।।

It requires an extraordinary person in an extraordinary situation for the Godhead to elaborate the philosophy of action. So the Lord from whom all living entities derive their existence and identity and who is the ultimate resting place of the millions of the galaxies asked the depressed Arjuna to abide by his Drama and perform his prescribed duty abandoning the desires of the fruits of the activity. Yoga has closest affinity with the state of mind. Mind is the motivating force of karma, and yoga is the cessation of the movements of the mind. Yoga is, in fact, the science of youthfulness, science of integrating mind, body and soul. Yoga is one of the surest ways to steady the wandering mind. The duality of pravriti and nivriti is rooted in vriti that is the vibration or sensation of mind. One immersed in nivriti can be led into pravriti and the one entrenched in pravriti can be motivated towards nivriti. But one who is a victim of vriti is sure to meet his painful end.

Duryodhan on the battlefield knew what was to be done, but would not do it and he knew what should not be done but could not abstain from it.

Many ancient philosophers have exhibited particular tendencies.
