Preface

The term neonatology is a new and independent discipline of modern medical science. In Ashtang Ayurveda one of the important anga (branch) has been named as “Bala Roga or Kaumar Bhritya” by Charak, Sushruta and Kashyapa respectively as separate branch or discipline of Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, successful management of a new born (Shishu) or Child (Bala) has been collectively termed as ‘Kaumar Bhritya’.

Though, many technological advances have been made in this area in medical world, yet in Ayurvedic age of Indian medical history many valuable areas have been considered by Charak and Vagabhat which need exposure for the benefit of modern Ayurveda scholars of human anatomy and paediatrics. The discipline of neonatal care very much developed at the later stages of embryology and fetal development. Immature or pre-term infants and their organogenesis process also needs much care by a pediatrician (Bala Roga Visheshagya). Anatomy and physiology of full term baby (Shishu) or neonate takes many changes with pediatrician must know.

There are immense differences between Ayurveda and modern approach towards neonatal care. Yet compromising approach is essentially needed for becoming an expert paediatrician or Bala Roga Visheshagya. It will definitely help to save several numbers of casualties of a new born, particularly in Indian society. Many differences in anatomical relations take place between a full term neonate and adult. Similarly, there are many differences between a complete nine month born neonate, child and adult. Many structural differences do occur in gaseous environment in Deha Prakriti in just born and after few weeks of birth, including genetic functions of various Srotas system. Even the parameters of Praman Sharir do take place in different mile stones of a neonate. Changes in Panch Bhautik Quantum and Doshik level also take place between Bala (Kaumar) or Shaishva Kal (Neonatal weeks). Changes also occur in a 20 weeks gestation fetus and forty weeks fetus. Therefore, study of twenty, twenty five thirty five weeks new born variations must be known to child specialist.

Thus authors are in mood to suggest an Ayurvedic Scholar to study and understand the Neonatal (Bala-Shishu or kaumar) anatomy, physiology and proper management of a new born on Ayurvedic as well as on modern lines.

Every paediatrician should note that a new born infant is not a miniature adult; a new born is a new born. Similarly, one should keep in mind that low weight and preterm infants are not similar in comparison to full term infants.

Pediatrician must estimate the developmental age of neonate.

The neonatal gestational age and its measurement also have great differences.

Writers would like to mention that the main object of writing this handbook is to provide knowledge, not only of modern methods of care of a neonate to a paediatrician, but main purpose is to provide important information to Ayurvedic and even modern scholars that new born is not merely a miniature adult, but he should also know that many anatomical, physiological and pathological changes do commonly occur in a neonate or just born and an in adult child.

Keeping all above aspects of neonatology authors have taken this task write this book-
