Today Indians are proud to claim ownership of a Constitution which has sustained democracy, human rights and the rule of law for over six decades. One hundred and twenty five crore Indians constituting nearly one-fifth of the human race, belonging to diverse religions, speaking different languages and following varied political ideologies are united as one, sharing a common destiny under a secular, democratic state. Free and fair elections involving over 600 million voters, smooth transfer of power and demonstrated strength of unity in diversity have made the so-called developed world wonder whether democracy has been part of the genetic construction of Indians! The story of this political miracle embedded in India's freedom struggle, in the making of its Constitution, in the statesmanship of its political leadership particularly during the initial journey of the Republic, and the vision of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, is discussed in this book on Indian Constitutionalism.

Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon is Founder of the National Law School of India, Bangalore, where he initiated a new model of legal education-the five year integrated LL.B. programme. He has also been Founder-Vice Chancellor of National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata. Prof. Menon is former Director, National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.

TO MARK THE 125TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of Independent India, Nehru Centre, Mumbai, thought of bringing out a volume on Nehru and Indian Constitutionalism', a subject on which there is a dearth of published material. Nevertheless, Nehru's ideas on constitutionalism are profound and his contribution in implementing the Constitution that India gave to itself is enormous.
