Ancient Indian scriptures say that the human being is composed of the same basic elements as that of whole universe, and hence, the naturally occurring foods and drugs are congruous to constituents of the body. These substances bring about the changes, increase or decrease of the elements. Balance of these elements in the body is considered as health and imbalance the disease. This is the fundamental concept of indigenous medical system of India, Ayurveda, the science of life. The basic elemental composition in the human body is explained in terms of Dosha, Dhatu and Mala and related constituents. Similarly the same is understood in various foods and drugs by their properties. Administration of these substances and application of these principles help in nourishment of body and help prevent and cure diseases.
Utilization of naturally occurring substances for maintaining and promotion of health' and prevention and 'cure of illness has been in vogue since the time immemorial. This system lays special emphasis on the importance of foods in health. Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, also prescribed the natural foods for maintaining the health and said 'let your food be your medicine' Concepts of nature cure have roots in Ayurveda.
