The Manufacture and sale of Unani Drugs is being regulated through the provisions of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. For the purpose of maintaining quality of products, the provisions of this act, including enforcement of Good Manufacturing practices (GMP), are being effectively enforced. The functions of this Pharmacopoeia Committee are twofold, i.e. preparation of National Unani Formulary (Manual of standard formulations in view of multiplicity of private formularies in vogue) and Unani Pharmacopoeia of India. (A compendium of enforceable /practical standards for single and compound unani drugs for ensuring quality of products manufactured by industry). Thus the UPC. is a forum indirectly responsible for enabling manufacture /availability of drugs according to specifications contained in the official documents.
