Book Description
Preface

Bharatidasan's dream about the future of Tamil language. literature and Culture is coming true. His life-long desire that Tamil literature should be made known through translations into numerous world languages is being fulfilled.

Where is the day

when the honey river

will pour into my ear

incessantly

the news of this worlds' wish

to see mother Tamil, my Tamil's poems

in a thousand tongues?

Central Institute of Classical Tamil has undertaken the onerous task of getting forty-one ancient Tamil Classics translated into English and other western and Indian languages as these immortal works reflect the sweetness of Tamil, its strength, its uniqueness, its heritage, its richness and its grandeur.

Now we are proud to launch the Kannada translations of Ettuttokai and Pattuppättu, ably done by a select band of scholars led by Thiru R.Srinivasan associated with the reputed Bangalore Tamil Sangam.

Narrinai Gai is one of the eight anthologies (ettuttokai) consisting of poems in akaval metre composed by 192 poets. This collection was caused to be made by Maran Valut and includes an invocatory song written by Bharatam Patiya Peruntevagar Kuntokai, Nagriņai and Akannuru describe in exquisite dramatic monologues the various moods of lovers in 400 verses each, the first containing stanzas of four to eight lines, the second of nine to twelve lines, the third of thirteen to thirty-one lines, T.P.Meenakshisundaram has stated that since this anthology consists of poems of moderate length, it is aptly called 'nal tinai".

The images employed in many of these poems are so exquisite that some of the poets area known only by the images found in their poems.
