NANALAL (1877-1946), hailed as the rising "full moon" of Gujarati poetry, dedicated him- self to the service of modern Gujarati poetry. He also resigned his lucrative Government job to devote himself to literature. His father, Dalpatram, was also a distinguished Gujarati poet. Both the father and the son dedicated themselves to the service of modern Gujarati poetry in an unbroken continuity of about a century.
Nanalal evolved rhythmic style to free poetry from the fetters of prosody and described his new style as a "revolt of a young man against the imperialism of prosody, 2200 years old". Nanalal was a messenger of Spring. He sang of beauty, joy and eternal hope.
Dr. U. M. Maniar, the writer of this mono- graph, had the privilege of knowing Kavi Nanalal intimately a fact which gives a vantage point and an added interest to this monograph. Dr. Maniar, besides being a short story writer and a critic, is a keen student of English literature.
