The importance of the correct identity and nomenclature of all plants needs no emphasis. As a result of frequent changes in the Botanical names of a number of well-known plants, the users face considerable difficulties to use or refer to the correct scientific names Prof. M.B. Raizada, formerly Forest Botanist. Forest Re- search Institute and Colleges. Dehra Dun, published three lists of name changes of common Indian plants in 1958, 1966 and 1968. A large number of these names has since changed and no single publication exists incorporating these changes. Much confusion, therefore, exists with regard to the use of correct nomenclature of plants. A large volume of enquiries, therefore, emanates from various Branches of this Institute as well as from other Departments. This publication is a revision and updating of botanical names used in Raizada's publications. It is proposed to publish another list covering came changes not included in the present list. In this publication, current valid name has been given as the first name in accordance with the provisions of International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, which is followed by the basionym and synonyms. For the sake of convenience and to facilitate easy reference, the names have been arranged alphabetically and not phylogenetically. An index has also been provided in order to facilitate substitution of old names commonly in use at present by correct changed names which have been given in capital letters.
