A small book on Saivacharya Nagarjuna was composed by me a few years back. Sanction for its Publication by Ranvir Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyupeetha, Jammu was sought for some time in 1982. It did not come for a long time till the matter came to the notice of Dr. Mandana Mishra, the present Director of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Samsthan. He found the work quite interesting and accorded the sanction without delay in 1983. Bhrngisasamhita, a voluminous Tirtha-mahatmya, was lying in the press at that time. It was therefore decided that the publication of the book on Nagrajuna along with three other small books, edited by the members of the staff on the Saivadarsana Kosa Project and sanctioned for publication b the Vidyapeetha, be taken up in the next financial year. Svatantryta-darpana by Dr. B.N. Pandit was published in 1984-85. Its publication was followed by that of a Fasciule of the Encyclopaedia of Kashmir Saivism in 1985-86. Now comes the turn of Saivacarya Nagarjuma for publication in 1986-87.

Dr. Mandana Mishra, the Director of the Samsthan, deserved thanks for his keen interest and proper encouragement in such research oriented publication work taken up by the vidyayeetha. Dr. Jagannatha Pathaka, the Principal of the Vidyappeetha also deserves thanks for providing facilities for such literacy work. Dr. D. N. Shastri, helped me in preparing the press copy of the work in hrnd and Dr. Brajnandan Sharma and Dr. Girija Sharma rendered help in proof reading with keen interest. I am thankful to all these scholars.

Detailed information about the manuscripts and transcripts used by me in editing the present work is being give in its Introductory Chapter. As for the source of the transcript used by the inmates of the ashram of Swami Vidyadhara at Srinagar in publishing the 2nd edition of the two religo-philosophic hymns by Nagarjuna, I made recently one more enquiry and came to know the same fact that Swami ji heard some Pandit at Ganesh-pura (near Pahalgam) chanting the hymns in a temple. Becoming hightly interested in them on account of their poetic and Philosophic value, he got a transcript prepared by the Pandit concerned for him and imparted its copies to his disciples at Srinagar. Later they published the hymns after the Swami had left this mortal world. The history of the other sources of the copies of the hymns is given in detail in the introductary Chapter.
