Preface

Cancer arrives without notice. The very word cancer makes most of us tremble in fear. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. Nothing can affect a person as deeply as cancer. Cancer mocks what we had in our lives. Cancer torments every dim hope to most. A stroke of cancer is like a journey into a far unknown country. The body revolves around the centre through a Gordian knot linking the body at the periphery of the circle with the spirit at the centre. Cancer comes to snap the rope of connection, the centripetal force bringing stability in life. At times, it wins. It times, you win. At times, nobody is a winner, but the life span gets truncated. Cancer can go wherever it wants. We may not stop it, but it cannot distance our faith and attitude.

Today my writing about Life after Cancer and all of the struggles that we face have been seen by hundreds of thousands of people across the globe. I am just a small dot in the huge network of patients, who tried to capture the trials, tribulation, pains, agonies of a patient driven to the edge of life and making a comeback. I would not have thought of venturing into writing the memoirs, which anyway is just ordinary and mortal like many other human beings.

Many of my friends and colleagues were keen to know the progress from time to time. The English word, 'I am doing fine, Reports are OK' just saved me, but hid many things behind the veil of managing fine. I thought in writing; I would be probably able to do justice to their question. I poured my heart and soul in recollecting and presenting a piece, which should be a source of inspiration for many cancer patients making the arduous journey. It is an amazingly fulfilling feeling in life to share my adventure with the hope that I would be able to add something this to the world, to throw insight on trials and tribulations of a cancer patient.

We are all in the dialogue of Illness, death and dying, whether or not we are talking about it. My written story is similar in many ways to an unwritten tale of many. We find that search we had, is not one of our kind. The hurricane of longing to live one more day and to give your love to your family and friends is always exciting, helping you to dream and accept the torment of treatment. I am lucky to be a survivor. When I looked back, it appeared it was a story of the love of life, a story of a battle, a story unfolding deeper spirituality, a story of making a long journey with a trusted and amazing oncologist, a story of compassion, friendship and goodwill, a story of guts and willpower to overcome the obstacles, a story of a fight against unethical practices, a story of watching a movie of cancer, how it unfolds as I came across.

The story is incredibly simple. You have been diagnosed with Stage II Cancer. You underwent many chemos, transplant, the treatment protocol and your response to it. The time you took time to recover, the visits that you made to the hospital and the money that you spent. The day you checked into the hospital, and the day you regained your freedom by walking out of the hospital.

Foreword

The smile never faded from his face during treatment. My heart melted reading through his detailed experiences and view of different aspects of the journey of a cancer patient from diagnosis to the end of treatment.

This book covers not only his journey, but also encompasses coping mechanisms, information on alternative therapies, bursting cancer myths and giving a philosophical and spiritual touch. I strongly believe in his advice to patients taking strong treatments “to take one day at a time”.

Mr J P Dash has always wanted to help other patients and has taken substantial time and effort in compiling his experiences and knowledge. Yes, “Cancer arrives without notice” and one has to learn to deal with it.

Mr J P Dash is an intelligent, thoughtful and wonderful person with a positive attitude who planned and prepared for his treatment path at every step with great coping strategies. After the though bone marrow transplant treatment, he has returned to work and is excelling in his career.
