The present book is different from usual descriptive accounts of the Islamic monuments in Bihar particularly in Sasaram and Rohtasgarh and their style. It tries to understand the regional styles in their proper perspective. In this volume, Dr. Abha Rani's focus has been more on individual monuments and the comprehensive view must be based on an analysis of the monuments. She has also described their decorative pattern and architectural excellence. A number of photographs, plans elevation of monuments and maps have been added to make the work as illustrative as possible.
Dr. Abha Rani has worked extensively on Indo Islamic architecture. She holds research grant from the Indian Council of Historical research related to the "Indo-Islamic Architecture of Bihar". During the last thirty years, she has carried out research work on various fields of Indian art-history. She has participated in many conferences and seminars and has published many articles on medieval art and architecture, culture and archaeology in various reputed journals and proceedings. Among other books and essays, she is the author of "Architecture of Delhi 1320 AD to 1388 AD" and "Muslim Architecture of Bihar Vol.I Patna and Biharsharif." Her current research interests are the contemporary painting during 18th century and 19th century in Bihar, widely known as the 'Patna Kalam' and 'Buddhist remains of Bihar'.
The present Volume entitled 'Muslim Architecture of Bihar Vol.II Sasaram & Rohtasgarh' carries the account of Sasaram and Rohtasgarh. Glorious past of Sasaram has given it a respectful place in Indian History and the Rohtasgarh Fort is one of the strongest forts in medieval age. This book is different from usual descriptive accounts of the Islamic monuments in Bihar particularly in Sasaram and Rohtasgarh and their style. It tries to present the regional styles in their proper perspective. My focus has been more on individual monuments and the comprehensive view is based on an analysis of the monuments. It is believed that the presentation of the work in this manner will enable it to be more conveniently studied and handled more easily than if it were produced in publication rather bulky volume.
I am indebted to Sri Arunish Chawla (Home Ministry, New Delhi) the then DDC of Sasaram who helped me in reaching tough terrain of Rohtasgarh. It was impossible for me to visit and took photographs. Thanks to Sri Harikant Rai for special help in this project he rendered. I express my sincere gratitude.
Nihar and Sidhant: My Husband and my grandson are my greatest source of inspiration.
Sri Praveen Mittal Publisher, B.R. Publishing Corporation, Delhi, for his generous willingness to publish these volumes.
