Nandalike Lakshminarayana (1870-1901), popularly known as Muddana, was the real symbol of transition from the old to modern Kannada literature. Rightly hailed as the 'Herald of Modern Kannada literature', Muddana despite the suffering due to the onslaught of poverty, enriched Kannada literature by his prose and poetry. Author of Rathnavali Kalayanam and Kumara Vijayam (Yakshaganas). Sri Ramapattabhishekam and Sri Ramasvamedham, Muddana was an unassuming scholar in his own right. The tempo and style of his prose writings have a charm and poetic rhythm, incomparable in the whole domain of Kannada literature. Panje Mangesha Rau's fitting euology on Muddana deserves special mention. "There are no Yakshagana Prasangas except Kumara Vijayam and poets except Nandalike".
Prof. M.V. Seetha Ramiah, the author of this monograph, narrates in this slender volume. Muddana's life and evaluates his works with understanding and competence and ably brings out the esssence of his genius for the benefit of non-Kannada readers.
