Mandu the "City of Joy" though in its ruins state of preservation of monuments, breaths an atmosphere of romance and mystery. It was the pleasure retreat of the succeeding sultans of Malwa and Emperor Jahangir. The relics are associated with the names of Nurjhan, the beautiful consort of Jahangir and Rupmati whose romance with Baz Bahadur, the last Malwa King; is a legend as depicted in the "Lady of the Lotus".
Prior to the advent of Muslims, an indegenous temple architecture was deeply. rooted in Mandu. This architecture was influenced by the various dynasties ruling over Malwa. Among these Paramaras of Malwa were the paramount rulers of Mandu. They were great builders of temples.
The conquest of India by Muslims made an effective and destinct impact on the indegenous cultural activities of India. This resulted in-coporation of New Style of architecture. The new modes and new principles of construction were also evolved which reflected expansion of the religions and social adherents of Islam on Indian soil.
This monograph is a detailed study of the monuments of mandu and contains chapters dealing with the geography and topography of the region. A detailed chapter is devoted for the historical back drop. A separate section gives a detailed account of art architecture of monuments. The style of arches, domes are the main issues discussed in details in this book.
Dr. Ajaipal Singh was born in 1933 in the village Paharipur Jankhat, district Farrukhabad U.P. He completed his High School and Intermediate from D.N. College Tirwa, Farrukhabad. He graduated in Science from Allahabad University and received Diploma in Civil Engineering from B.H.U. Varanasi. He took his M.A. degree from Vikram University, Ujjain and completed his post-graduate diploma in Museology from Bhopal University, Bhopal.
He was awarded Ph. D degree from Bhopal University.
Besides the books "Conservation and Museum Techniques", "Forts and Fortification of India", "Defensive Art of India" & "Monuments of Orchha". Dr. Singh has contributed a good number of research papers to various reputed journals.
Shri Shivpal Singh was born in 1964. He completed his graduation from Bhopal University in 1985 and post graduation in Ancient Indian History, culture and Archaeology from Vikram University, Ujjain, in 1990. He was awarded diploma in Photography from Bhopal University, Bhopal.
At present Shri S.P. Singh is working in the department of Archacology and Museums. He is a co-author of the book entitled "Monument of Orchha".
The present monograph; entitled "MONUMENTS OF MANDU" has been written for those who want to study the monuments from all angles, the historical aspect, constructional features, art and architecture of the individual buildings at a glance.
The monograph does not pretend to be a mannual containing all in one, but it provides also information for more inquisitive itinerant.
The present monograph must not be regarded as the last word, but as a prelude to the organized study of a large group of monuments erected by the powerful monarchs, the Sultans of Malwa, at one place.
